Vision Statement
TIKVAT YISRAEL CONGREGATION
Our vision is to be a dynamic Messianic Jewish Community
- MESSIANIC in that we desire to be truly Messianic-centered, believing that God sent Yeshua as Messiah to fulfill the historic hopes and destiny of Israel and that
He is focal point of the Jewish Scripture.
- JEWISH in that we seek the good of our people and embrace our common culture, interests, and hopes. We seek to continually deepen our knowledge of our culture, faith, history, and needs of the Jewish people worldwide.
- COMMUNITY in that we truly desire to be
'mischpochah'. We want to grow in caring for one another, meeting on another's needs and simply "being there" for one another. Our primary way of fulfilling this part of our vision is through chavurah groups.
- We hope to share our faith with others, and to see that every person, Jewish and Gentile, in Northeastern Ohio has the opportunity, by the power of God's Spirit, to thear the words of Yeshua and to see his works. That is, we hope that every person, Jewish and Gentile, will have a personal encounter with the risen Messiah of Israel.
History
Back in 1975 Walter and Linda Lieber came to visit Cleveland where a small group of Messianic Jews were meeting on a weekly basis in home groups. They felt lead to move from the Akron/Canton area and take up residence in Cleveland Heights where they joined the small fellowship and opened up their home for a Erev Shabbat (Friday evening) home group.
As the work grew in numbers, Walter consulted with other established Messianic Fellowships and discussed legalizing the Fellowship under the name of Tikvat Yisrael ( The Hope of Israel). The small fellowship became chartered with the UMJC (Union of Messianic Jewish Congregations) and eventually moved to the Church of the Western Reserve in Gates Mills where it continued meeting on Erev Shabbat. The work continue to grow and Tikvat moved to larger quarters. During the year of 1982 Walter stepped down from his position and was relieved as Leader by Pastor Steve Coyle who later was followed by Rabbi Howard Silverman. In 1985 Walter again assumed leadership until 2004 when he announced that he was moving to Miami, Florida where he had accepted another position in International Ministry.
Tikvat Yisrael currently meets on Shabbat at the First Assembly of God Church on Richmond Road in Lyndhurst, OH.
