Tanakh     The Old Covenant
Tanakh, the ancient Hebrew Scriptures, is an acronym of the Hebrew names for the three sections of which it consists.

  • Torah - the five books of Moses - the Teachings
  • Ne'viim - the Prophets
  • Ketuvim - the Writings

    • In the Hebrew Bible, the books of the Torah, (The Law, or The Teachings) are titled for the first word or two written therein. Thus, Genesis, the first book of the Torah is transliterated from Hebrew as B'reshith, comes from the book's opening phrase,

    B'reshith bara Elohim et hashamayim v'et ha'arets
    In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.

    על נהרות בבל שם ישבנו גם־בכינו בזכרנו את־ציון׃

    137:1 By the rivers of Bavel we sat down and wept as we remembered Tziyon.

    על־ערבים בתוכה תלינו כנרותינו׃

    137:2 We had hung up our lyres on the willows that were there,

    כי שם שאלונו שובינו דברי־שיר ותוללינו שמחה שירו לנו משיר ציון׃

    137:3 when those who had taken us captive asked us to sing them a song; our tormentors demanded joy from us -"Sing us one of the songs from Tziyon!"

    איך נשיר את־שיר־יהוה על אדמת נכר׃

    137:4 How can we sing a song about ADONAI here on foreign soil?

    אם־אשכחך ירושלם תשכח ימיני׃

    137:5 If I forget you, Yerushalayim, may my right hand wither away!

    תדבק־לשוני לחכי אם־לא אזכרכי אם־לא אעלה את־ירושלם על ראש שמחתי׃

    137:6 May my tongue stick to the roof of my mouth if I fail to remember you, if I fail to count Yerushalayim the greatest of all my joys.

    זכר יהוה לבני אדום את יום ירושלם האמרים ערו ערו עד היסוד בה׃

    137:7 Remember, ADONAI, against the people of Edom the day of Yerushalayim's fall, how they cried, "Tear it down! Tear it down! Raze it to the ground!"

    בת־בבל השדודה אשרי שישלם־לך את־גמולך שגמלת לנו׃

    137:8 Daughter of Bavel, you will be destroyed! A blessing on anyone who pays you back for the way you treated us!

    אשרי שיאחז ונפץ את־עלליך אל־הסלע׃

    137:9 A blessing on anyone who seizes your babies and smashes them against a rock!
